Lighting

My film is going to rely on lots of my own artificial lighting to create different atmospheres in different scenes. I used another student's blog to get these photos, which are a demonstration of three point lighting.

The lights are broken down into three: the key light, the fill light, and the back light.

The key light is the one to the left, and is typically the main light used in filming. This light is influential on the scene and helps to create shadows on the other side of the object being lit. I will use shadows heavily throughout my short film, so this form of lighting is one that I intend to use.

The fill light is the one depicted centrally, and is used to remove unwanted shadows created by the main light. It is the lighter one of the two, and I will only use this form of lighting when I have unwanted shadows present in my scenes, which may be a common problem due to the nature of the film I am creating, which will rely heavily on manipulated lighting.

The third and final light is the photo on the right, and is one I don't intend to use over the course of filming. The back light is primarily used to define characters from their surroundings rather than to provide a direct light, which is something I doubt I will need to do. However, upon experimenting with the lighting in my scenes, this light could prove to be useful and I may end up using it.

Before filming I will research all 3 lighting techniques and eventually decide on which of the three to use. I will definitely use the main, key light but I am currently unsure on whether or not I will use the remaining two.

Update on Filming

I had previously planned to film my piece of work on a date that I and my actress had set in the Christmas holiday. However, the night before filming I fell ill, and was unable to film. I currently cannot film because now my actress is ill and I am in the middle of my mock exams, meaning I now plan to film next weekend, if my actress is back to full health. This has been an unfortunate set back but it has been out of my hands.

Camera

I am planning to film on my iPhone 6 camera, because I think that the quality of the camera is far better than the quality of the camera that the school provides. However, until I can clear the memory of my phone, I am unable to film as I have insufficient storage. This is only a minor problem because it will be very easy to resolve, simply by deleting some things I don't need.

Tripod

As I have used the schools cameras in previous film projects and have not been overly pleased with the results and the quality, me and two other students have decided to order a tripod that fits our phones and share it between us. The quality of the iPhone 6 will be better than the school camera so buying this tripod will allow me to get good quality, steady videos. Sharing the tripod might cause some problems because we might need to use it at the same time, but as long as we all ensure that we plan our filming in advance there should be no real issue. As I plan to film over the Christmas holidays, I will have a lot of free time to move days of filming around if I need to.

Costume

Abigail: As Abigail is just a regular teenage girl, she will be wearing typical, basic clothes you would expect a teenage girl to wear. I am considering having her in work clothes as she will be returning home at the beginning of the film.

Antagonist: The character inside Abigail's home will be wearing a very dark outfit, almost similar to that of the antagonist in the Scream films. However, I don't think I'll give the character a mask as I want the character to appear mysterious.

Film Magazine Review - Ancillary Project

For the second part of my ancillary task, I will be creating a film magazine review. Magazine reviews tend to cover a double page spread which I intend to recreate. I just googled "film magazine reviews" in order to find this collection of images. Typically, a review will contain interviews and key quotes from directors and actors, and images of the actors posing as their characters. I will need to do this in mine to recreate a realistic article. The colours in these tend to just be a white background with black words, or a large blue title. This
